Tracheostomy vs. Sleep Apnea

Tracheostomy vs. Sleep Apnea

This medical exhibit displays the sagittal view of the ear, nose, and throat to compare a tracheostomy and sleep apnea. A tracheostomy tube is inserted into the neck (below the larynx) and extends into the trachea, allowing air to flow directly into the trachea. Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder characterized by the posterior tongue and soft palate occasionally collapsing into the back of the pharynx, temporarily blocking airflow and causing the patient to awaken.
