Surgical Removal of Pituitary Tumor

Surgical Removal of Pituitary Tumor

A medical illustration depicting the sagittal view of the brain and the surgical removal of a pituitary tumor. In this procedure, an endoscope is introduced into the sphenoid sinus and a chisel is used to open the sella and provide access to the tumor. The tumor tissue is then removed with pituitary forceps to allow the placement of fat and surgicel into the sella in order to seal the dura. Finally, a bone graft plug is placed into the base of the sella to close the skull base.
