Progression of Ectopic Pregnancy

Progression of Ectopic Pregnancy

The anterior cross-sectional view of the uterus showing the progression of an ectopic pregnancy. Each month, a developing follicle undergoes maturity and ruptures. Once ruptured, ovulation occurs and the mature egg is released form the ovary, moving down the fallopian tube, and is ready to be fertilized. The next step is cleavage which is a series of mitotic cell divisions, causing the multicellular organism to begin to develop. The multicellular organism is then implanted within the fallopian tube which is characterized as an ectopic pregnancy (outside the uterus).
