Progression of Deep Tissue Injury

Progression of Deep Tissue Injury

This exhibit displays the progression of a deep tissue injury using skin cubes. The initial condition shows continued direct pressure of the body weight over a bony prominence, compressing and damaging the soft tissues beneath the skin. The subsequent condition shows ischemia and inflammation of the deep tissues. As the deep tissue injury worsens, the soft tissues begin to erode leading to the breakage of the overlying skin, revealing the fully developed soft tissue ulcer. Anatomy highlighted in this exhibit includes the bone, muscle, subcutaneous fat, and the skin.
