Progression of Compartment Syndrome

Progression of Compartment Syndrome

Illustration in four stages to demonstrate the progression of compartment syndrome. First the normal anatomy, second the initial stage of compartment syndrome and the swelling within fascial compartments leading to compression of nerves and vessels. Third is the swelling and ischemia of muscles leading to reduced blood flow to the muscles and intense pain. Fourth is the breakdown and necrosis of the muscles showing continued devascularization leading to widespread tissue death.
