Placement of Lumbar Peritoneal Shunt

Placement of Lumbar Peritoneal Shunt

This exhibit shows the posterior, sagittal, lateral, and axial views of the lumbar spine undergoing the placement of a peritoneal shunt. To place the shunt, a spinal needle is inserted into the spinal canal in the lower lumbar spine. The catheter is then tunneled beneath the skin to allow drainage of CSF into the abdominal cavity. The catheter is then placed through the dura and into the CSF space.
