Periventricular Leukomalacia (PVL)

The coronal view of a baby's brain with periventricular leukomalacia (PVL). PVL is common in premature babies and is characterized by injury of death of the white matter in the brain. Grade I PVL shows increased periventricular echogenicity lasting more than 7 days. Grade 2 PVL shows small periventricular cysts beginning to develop. Anatomy of the baby's brain highlighted in this view includes the gray matter, white matter, germinal matrix, and the lateral ventricles.
