Necrotizing Fasciitis

Necrotizing Fasciitis

This exhibit shows the cross sectional view of the skin with the progression of necrotizing fasciitis. The progression shows microorganisms arriving at the site of a deep tissue injury via the subcutaneous vasculature. Bacteria then accumulates in the damaged tissues. With the increase and spread of bacteria, necrosis of the deep tissues occurs and gradually progresses upward, causing vascular occlusion and damage to the deep tissue. The layers of the skin include the epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous fat, and muscle.
