Leukemia and Leukocyte Sludge

Leukemia and Leukocyte Sludge

This exhibit depicts the lateral view of the brain and an enlarged view of a brain vessel comparing the normal circulatory to the circulatory system with leukemia and leukocyte sludge. The normal circulatory anatomy includes red blood cells (RBCs), platelets, and white blood cells (leukocyte). The circulatory system with leukemia is characterized by the dramatic increase in the number of white blood cells. The circulatory system with leukocyte sludge is characterized by blood flow obstruction due to a large group of white blood cells, red blood cells, and other products sticking together.
